Shockey and Kids Take on El Capitan Largemouth
Fishing San Diego Area lakes and reservoirs can be awesome this time of year. The fis h are very receptive, and it becomes easy to teach our most common techniques to even the most novice of anglers. I was very fortunate to have three folks whose angling skills were quite a bit more advanced, and that helped in what proved to be a tricky bite.
When Shockey first called me about fishing El Cap with his kids, I was ready to take them to the most productive bass lake San Diego has to offer. After seeing all three miss strikes on Flukes, and having Skeet get even closer to actually landing fish, I knew we had to use something for a more solid hookset. Shockey started catching fish on an Open Water Custom Baits Dominator colored Drop Shot Worm, and it took no time for Sarah to want to throw the same.
When we got to my favorite spawning hump, Sarah put on a clinic, and Shockey was her best student. Skeet took a little while to catch on. The funniest part was everytime Skeet would give up, and grab a different rig. Sarah would catch a fish on the rod he just put down. She was definitely fond of the pink worm. And so were the fish.
We worked that spot over a few times, and even found it worth anchoring on. The fish came rolling up on it for awhile, and even though several other boats came up within casting range, and shared some of our fish, there seemed to be enough to go around.
Why, there were even enough fish for Skeet to finally get in the act. Sorry Skeet, Sarah made me write that. ;-)
It was a great day having such a fun family aboard, and seeing this fantastic San Diego area bass lake producing fish the way it has been lately. El Cap is truly awesome right now, and is a gem of San Diego county.
Oh and Skeet, the boy with the great bass fisherman's name -- he got one in his hand for the camera.
Thank you for reading,
James
