First San Diego Bay Trip of the Year

When Chuck and I agreed to fish San Diego Bay on the first, it seemed like a great way to start the New Year. So why not? Right? Of course I forgot that Chuck would be wSan Diego Spotted Bay Bassorking on New Year’s Eve doing his D.J. gig. A simple phone call a few days ahead made sense, as did pushing our meeting time back an extra hour. Neither of us were in the mood to snap a bunch of pics, so sorry if this is more wordy than visual.

It felt good to sleep in before heading out my sixth trip in a row fishing San Diego Bay. Not only that, but I think we hit the spot just at the right time. I told Chuck what we had learned from previous trips. I showed him the same spoon that Robert used the day before. He did not hesitate a bit to put the spoon on and get busy with it. After about 40 or so Spotted Bay Bass, and a California Halibut that just touched the 22 mark, we both thought it was time to finally crank up the big motor, and see what Anthony’s had for lunch. To our disappointment, they were not opened for the first of the year. Tom Ham’s New Year’s Brunch seemed a bit over budget, so off to Burger King at the Ferry Landing it was.

During lunch, I told Chuck that I have been really surprised that the usual stuff had not really been working lately. But, being the explorers we are, after getting back on board, we dropped some Butter Bombs down and gave it a shot anyways. While that proved only marginally effective (four bites per hour & one hook up), we thought we should go bird gazing for a bit.  Chuck Hooks Up on Another San Diego Bay Bass

We found an active flock over my favorite reef, and Chuck made the best of it by catching a few, while I surfed the bow on the many speed boat wakes. We chased the birds down to where we started, and if it weren’t for the alarm on my cell phone, we would not have ever left. Chuck stayed with the spoon, and I put down the 2.5" SwimSmeltz for a larger Western Plastics Swim Tail. We loaded up on about 50 more Spotted Bay Bass, and had a blast doing it. All in all our day was complete when we both gripped of sore arms. Amazing what fish from 11-18 inches can do when you catch enough of them.

Our report by numbers looks like this: 108 Spotted Bay Bass, 2 Sand Bass, 2 California Halibut, 12 Jacksmelt, and 3 Mackerel. All fish, even the squeaker Halibut, were released.

Thank you for reading.
