Fishing San Diego Bay is all Relative
Knowing that the Bay Bass Fishing in San Diego Bay had been pretty decent, and even though coming off of a tournament that Chuck and I had a lack luster finish, I had no reservations in taking David and Mitch out for a day on our beautiful bay for some awesome bass fishing. When I pulled up to the U.S. Grant Hotel to pick up David, I didn't know who I was looking for. It was early morning, downtown San Diego was starting to come to life, and the Grant was in full display of all its splendor. As I walked into the lobby however, it became perfectly clear. David was the guy with the long-sleeved plaid flannel shirt; gortex lined vest, ball cap, and an "I'm going fishing while the rest of you are working" smile on his face.
Mitch, being a local was going to meet David and I at the Shelter Island Launch Ramp. The neatest thing about fishing with these two gentlemen was that they were cousins-in-law. I guess that's what you call it when two guys marry gals who are cousins. Anyways, they had never actually met before, and here they were about to take on the big bay. It didn't take long before David got the first Sand Bass of the day. Although a rather diminutive specimen of a San Diego Bay Barred Sand Bass, it was the first one none-the-less. I think more than anything, both men were surprised at how quickly we got on fish, and started to catch some nice Bass and Sculpin almost immediately. These two gentlemen were true blooded fishermen all the way; wanting to spend more time casting than posing for pictures. We had several doubles and a few triple hook ups.
We didn't have to spend too much time on spots. Typical Bay Bass fishing in San Diego; they are always biting something somewhere. Anytime our spot stopped producing, we simply ran to another one, and immediately caught fish. David even convinced a sub-legal Halibut to join the party. Although Berkley Gulp! baits contributed to most of our catch, we did have plenty that ate the Western Plastics Swim Tail. Of course, all of our baits were augmented by dipping them in Uni Butter. It was great having these two fine gentlemen aboard. David and Mitch both were excellent, and the big bay showed its appreciation. They even let me do some fishing, and of course three days after the San Diego Open Bay Bass Tournament, I catch a really nice Sandy. They insisted I pose and post my pic. Really, they did. Well, we all had fun, and that's what matters. Final Tally: 64 Spotted Sand Bass (Spotties), 14 Barred Sand Bass (Sandies), 4 Sculpi n, & 1 Halibut. All fish were released. It was another great day Bay Bass Fishing in San Diego Bay. Thank you for reading.
