Frank and Nancy Take On the Big Bay

I have met many folks from the great Lone Star State of Texas. Most all of the men I have met have been the most giving gentlemen you would ever wanna meet. That is exactly how I saw Frank. A fine gentleman, that not only was a man of few words, but also was very gracious when our guest, Nancy, caught fish. He was as excited seeing Nancy reel in a Sand Bass from the big bay, as he was catching one himself. And when it came to pictures, FSand Bass of San Diego Bayrank was more than happy to click a shot for Nancy while passing up a shot of his own. What a guy.

To explain what a Santa Ana does to our fishing, and weather in general, to someone from out of state, normally takes a dry erase board and pie charts. But Frank, being an avid outdoors man and premier landscaper, understood immediately that we would have to slow down, and capitalize on every bite we had. Nancy, on the other hand, born and raised in Southern California, was having fun in the sun, and couldn't shake a fish loose if she wanted to. The Spotted Bay Bass; Sand Bass, Sculpin, Halibut, and Mackerel, all liked Nancy.

Having had recent success Rockin' a particular alley in San Diego Bay, we went to some of the same San Diego Sculpinspots as on recent trips. That's where Nancy got it started. Of course, it didn't take long for Frank to show off his exotic species finding skills. The Sculpin were definitely out to play, and Frank (being on vacation) came to play too.

The mild Santa Ana's gave us some beautiful sunshine to play in. However, add the lack of wind with lack of tidal pull, and we were prone to running around making bites happen. We got them to happen, but it took some boat rides to make the best of San Diego Bay this fine January day. The Bass were there, and decent sized ones too. Most all of our fish came on Berkley Gulp! baits dipped in Uni Butter. Drop-shot seemed to be the key method, though Frank and I did have a few on Western Plastics Swim Tails on 1/2 ounce lead heads. We even caught a few on SwimSmeltz with 1/4 ounce heads.

California Halibut of San Diego Bay San Diego Bay Barred Sand Bass

Final: 34 Spotted Bay Bass, 16 Sand Bass, 6 Sculpin, 4 Halibut, & 3 Mackerel - all released.

Being able to show Frank and Nancy around the ever beautiful San Diego Bay was a lot of fun. Catching a few Bay Bass here and there was a true bonus to a wonderful day on the big bay.

Thank you for reading.
