Bay Bass Fishing with Steve
Regardless of who I fish San Diego Bay, or Lakes with, I make it no secret that I am a Christian. Of course, with that comes scrutiny; it seems we all think we know what defines a good Christian. One thing I know, I am far from being done with my walk. What I mean by that is, I am the first to admit that I am not perfect. One of my greatest faults is jealousy. After meeting Steve, a resident of Coronado, who spends parts of his week golfing, the other parts of his week fishing, and all the time he wants with his family, and you have to admit, Steve has a lot for us to be jealous of.
I picked Steve up at the courtesy dock for the Glorietta Bay Public Ramp at about 9:00AM. It isn’t often that I find myself in there, but when I do, I can usually have a good time. I thought Steve was a perfect candidate for me to share my three Glorietta Bay spots with. Although, we did immediately get bites, the fish really weren’t holding onto the baits well. Then Steve got a small sculpin. I followed up with one of my own. After seeing that they were males releasing themselves of spawn liquid, we let them go. A few more small bites were not enough to keep us there, so we ventured towards the bridge.
Up near my favorite piling, Steve got bit, and I connected with a decent spotty. Steve followed that up with a really nice spotted bay bass. The weather was really trying to get nasty on us, which we tried to ignore. That became more difficult to do while we were attempting to long line and the current and wind did not want to jive. Then the chop really kicked up. We did not let that kill our spirits, and we were able to get many more bites. Unfortunately, the bites we got came on slack lines and we only connected with about a third as many as we should have. None-the-less, it was a great time, and the San Diego Bay Bass Steve got were as chunky as can be.
We worked our way back into Glorietta Bay, and Steve gave me a clinic on how to catch small Halibut. I think the biggest was about 19”. It was nice to be out of the wind and feel what a solid hook-set was like.
The neatest part of the day, while I introduced Steve to Western Plastics Swimtails, and Berkeley Gulp! Baits, I was experimenting with an inline spinner of my own design, and a jig my buddy in Texas hand tied for me. Both new lures caught fish right beside the old stand by lures. Cool, eh?
One of my other faults is boastfulness. After getting to meet folks like Steve, and spending quality time fishing San Diego Bay with him, I guess you might say I now have something for others to be jealous of.
Thank you for reading,
James
