Bonefish for Kellen and Mike of SD Fish
Bonefish fishing San Diego Bay has been great lately. Our high pressure systems, and Spring Tides have given way to a Bonefish spawn that should be spectacular. In the meantime, the Bonefish are packing up on Ghost Shrimp like they are going out of style. There are some days that the bonefish fishing in San Diego Bay makes you think you were somewhere else. Sure, our bonefish aren't the size of the diesel engines they have in Belize, but believe me you, nothing zings a drag like a bonefish, whether in San Diego or the more exotic waters of the Caribbeans.
That being said, when Kellen first told me he wanted me to get him and his buddy Mike on some Bonefish, I had no doubt they would each get one. Then the weather changed, a low pressure set in, and you know how that can go. The thing is, the fishing for bonefish right now, is so good, even a day of bad weather wasn't enough to keep the bonefish from doing what they do best - ripping drag.
Kellen got things started with a hefty little sand shark, then when he got his first bonefish, I think he was surprised how hard they pull. Of course, neither he nor Mike were ready for the extra slime that bonefish carry when they start spawning. (I kinda forgot to warn them about that) A few rags later, and Kellen was casting in anticipation for his next bonefish of the day. Mike had a little more trouble setting the hook on his first bonefish, though. Both men had zing pows, and plenty of the usual San Diego Bay noseums were had.
It was really exciting when a school of small Corvina got into the mix. No big ones, but lots of fun.
All in all it was a great day with two fine fishermen and a really good low pressure fish count.
