Bay Fishing with Dave
Fishing with Dave is always a joy, and an adventure. What's cool about Dave is he has caught fish, knows he can go catch them anytime, therefore; he doesn't mind taking risks. That's just what we did on our last fishing trip out on San Diego Bay.
After having such a bumpy day with the Thompsons the day before, I was not reluctant at all to run from Chula Vista to Point Loma. The water was dead calm, and the traffic was nil. The only thing giving reservations to Dave's request of fishing the jetty was the fact that I have not been getting a good bite up there lately. The other thing about the jetty is you need water to roll over it, and the timing of our trip was off for that. None-the-less, Dave was willing to go for it, knowing that when you get one up there, it is usually worth it. I couldn't help but remember back to the last trip I had at Ralph's catching some incredible Calico Bass. Dave and I had worked about a hundred yards of jetty, and my eyes were constantly over my shoulder looking for birds above the lobster traps. If I had seen a flicker, Dave and I would have put the jetty on hold. Since it didn't happen, we trekked on. We went from the whistler to about a hundred yards from North Island, and all we had to show for it was a few Bass, and a few lost baits. One of the baits Dave lost came right after catching a spunky little Calico on it. It's never fun to lose lures, and even less so right after you catch a fish on it. Dave and I mourned his loss for a moment, and then we went back to work. It almost seems like the water was too calm - an exact opposite of the day before. We hit a few key areas on the way back down south. Fishing San Diego Bay is always fun knowing that if you are willing to adjust, there is always something to be caught. Add to that the tide was starting to be in our favor, and we got on 'em. They weren't big, and they weren't all bass, but we had our rods bent, and our lines stretched for awhile before having to go back. Again the Spotted Bay Bass were coughing up pinheads, and our best action came around birds, and Jacksmelt. We didn't catch more than a dozen bass total, but the ones we caught were pretty nice. And, considering Dave took some gambles, I'd say we did pretty good.
